Founded in 1987, The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB)  is the bookkeeping profession’s national association. AIPB’s mission is to achieve recognition of bookkeepers as accounting professionals, to keep bookkeepers up to date on changes in bookkeeping, accounting and tax, to answer bookkeepers’ everyday bookkeeping and accounting questions, and to certify bookkeepers who meet high, national standards. All members are all professional bookkeepers and have paid up front for membership in the organization. AIPB members receive "The General Ledger," the Institute's monthly technical newsletter that updates members on the latest changes in accounting, payroll, and tax regulations.


Bookkeepers are working behind the scenes at all kinds of companies, handling tasks such as tax reporting, general ledgers, and financial analysis. Today's bookkeeper is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the financial data for their company, produces accurate financial statements, and has to be on top of ever-changing tax codes and employee benefit plans.


65% of AIPB members work in small companies of 19 or fewer employees, while 76% are considered SOHO firms. AIPB members decide or influence the purchase of banking, payroll and healthcare services; technical, IT, computer, and telecommunications software and equipment, front of office and back of office supplies and services.
